Cleansing, moisturizing and applying treatments are sufficient steps towards keeping your skin looking its best, right? Wrong. Although all of the above are fundamental to an effective skin care routine, applying a tonique to your skin every day is just as important.
Tonique, toner, mist – whatever term you use, we want to give a little love to this often underrated and misunderstood skin care staple.
From how to apply, to finding the right one for you – you’ll find the answers below to a few common tonique questions:
What are the benefits of using a tonique?
- Helps balance the natural pH level of the skin
- Infuses the skin with natural vitamins, minerals and antioxidants (which help fight free-radical damage)
- Adds instant hydration to the skin
- Helps prep the skin to better absorb ingredients from further products and treatments
What’s the correct way to apply a tonique?
Apply one to two sprays of your toner (suited to your skin type) over the entire face and leave on. You can also spritz a few drops of the tonique on a cotton round and apply directly to your face.
How often should I apply a tonique?
Every day. Toners are normally applied as the second or third step of the beauty routine. If we’re speaking in terms of an at-home skin care routine, toners are applied to the skin after a cleanser and exfoliant and prior to applying a moisturizer. The beautiful thing about a toner is that it can also be applied to the skin anytime throughout the day. We recommend popping a toner in your bag or leaving one at your desk for instant hydration and an infusion of nutrients. A quick, refreshing spritz is all you need to bring your skin back to life during your busy day.
What tonique is best for me?
Toners are available for all skin types – so it’s best to select one that best addresses your skin concerns. According to Daily Makeover, it’s also important to select a toner with natural ingredients:
…[With] the wrong toner you could actually end up hurting your skin instead of helping it.“…[With] the wrong toner you could actually end up hurting your skin instead of helping it. Many toners contain large amounts of alcohol (which can dry out the skin and cause it to flake or overproduce oil), added fragrances (which can irritate the skin), and other harmful ingredients”.
Lime Refresh Tonique:
This particular toner made the cut in Vogue Magazine’s “Best Toners for Oily Skin”.
In an interview with Vogue, celebrity facialist, Joanna Vargas (whose clients include Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rachel Weisz, and Julianne Moore) recommends a tonique with Vitamin C (like our Lime Refresh Tonique): “It can help mattify the skin, and I’m partial to any toner that can be sprayed—the ones that you wipe on tend to over-strip, therefore causing the production of more oil.”
Sweet Red Rose Tonique: Lemon tones and refreshes the skin while sweet red rose petals help revitalize and add moisture to dry and dehydrated skin types.
Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist: Coconut water and fragrant neroli provide deep hydration, while Swiss Green Apple Stem Cells help reduce visible signs of aging.
All skin types (including sensitive):
Soothing Chamomile Tonique: Natural herbs help restore and soothe the look of skin. This toner also doubles as a neutralizer to deactivate the skin after the use of peel products and treatments.
